BIO

Zoi A. Traga Philippakos, PhD, is Associate Professor in the College of Education at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. She completed her Ph.D. at the University of Delaware, and her dissertation examined the effects of peer review using genre-specific criteria on fourth and fifth-graders persuasive writing. Her research interests include reading and writing instruction, strategy instruction and self-regulation, and teachers’ professional development. She has worked as an elementary school teacher and literacy coach, and she provides professional development to teachers on effective reading and writing strategies. She is the first author on the coedited book, Design Based Research in Education (2021) and the first author of the coauthored books; Developing Strategic Young Writers Through Genre Instruction: Resources for Grades K-2 (2020); Developing Strategic Writers Through Genre Instruction: Resources for Grades 3-5 (2015); Further, she is the co-author of Effective Read-Alouds for Early Literacy: A Teacher’s Guide for PreK-1 (2012); and co-author of Differentiated Reading Instruction in Grades 4 and 5: Strategies and Resources (2011). She has codeveloped and organized since 2010 the Writing Research Study Group at the Literacy Research Association (LRA) and is the Chair of the Writing Task Force at the International Literacy Association (ILA). She has published several articles and chapters on strategy instruction in writing and presented her research at national and international conferences.
